Rapid City, SD
Nestled on the eastern foothills of the Black Hills, Rapid City is known as the "Star of the West." With a population of 65,000 it shines as the business, industrial, cultural and economic hub of a large region that includes four states. With it's cosmopolitan feel Rapid City is large enough to accommodate the interests of those who enjoy a metropolitan atmosphere while being small enough to avoid the congestion of big city life.
Rapid City also shines as the hub of this legendary region's vacation and leisure activities. Five year-round museums, numerous theaters, eight area golf courses, bed & breakfast inns, resorts and campgrounds accommodate visitors seeking fun and adventure. To the east lie the mysterious Badlands; to the north stands Devils Tower; turn south to explore Jewel Cave National Park, Custer State Park, or Crazy Horse Mountain carving now in progress; or head 23 miles to majestic Mount Rushmore.

Spearfish, SD

Nestled in the Northern Black Hills of South Dakota, Spearfish is a picturesque city that reflects a classic turn-of-the-century character. With a population of close to 10,000 it is the third-largest community in our health care family. The town is situated at the mouth of Spearfish Canyon and its National Scenic Byway. The community skirts the Black Hills National Forest and is also home to Black Hills State University, South Dakota's third-largest state university.

Sturgis, SD

The city of Sturgis, population 7,000, was started in 1888 as a boom town catering to off- duty soldiers just outside the U.S. Cavalry's Fort Meade, site of the first public performance of our national anthem. Later it became a port of entry to the Black Hills goldfields. Today, Sturgis is known worldwide as "Motorcycle City USA" as it is home to the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Races each August. The event annually draws hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts from across the globe. Sturgis is home to Bear Butte, a sacred mountain to many American Indians. Not far away is the "Arlington of the West" the name given to the Black Hills National Cemetery, final resting place to many of our veterans.

Lead/Deadwood, SD

With a combined population of around 5,400 these two cities are known as the "Twin Cities" of the Black Hills. Deadwood and Lead have a rich and colorful place in U.S. history and a bright and engaging future. Deadwood is proud of its legendary status in western lore as the hub of this country's last gold rush. Deadwood is unique. The entire community is listed as a U.S. National Historic Landmark, the only such city in the United States. Lead (pronounced Leed) is home to the largest gold mine in the country, the Homestake Gold Mine that operated continuously for 125 years until December of 2001. Today the mine is poised to be a national scientific research center for the study of neutrinos. Lead is also the winter sports headquarters for western South Dakota and northeast Wyoming with two ski resorts and endless cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails.

Custer, SD

Custer, population 1,800, is the oldest community in the Black Hills. It was named for General George A. Custer who led an investigative expedition of 1,200 men into the Black Hills in 1874. The first discovery of gold in the Black Hills was made in French Creek just east of the city. Custer is surrounded by rugged granite peaks, and a number of world-class attractions including Mt Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial mountain carving - still in progress, Needles Highway, Custer State Park and Jewel Cave National Monument.
