Infectious Diseases are spread via bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites through a variety of ways, some of which include skin contact, contaminated food, breathing contaminated air, etc. Advancements have been made to control or minimize many infectious diseases; however, individuals are still susceptible to various organisms. The organisms can evolve and become resistant to available antibiotics and other treatments.  

A compromised immune system can be the cause of certain illnesses (i.e. AIDS or cancer) which may allow organisms to attack the human body and cause a serious illness or even worse, death.

The best way to prevent infectious disease is to wash your hands with warm soapy water, get vaccinated, use antibiotics sensibly, stay at home if you have signs and symptoms of an infection, prepare food wisely, pay special attention when cleaning the bathroom and kitchen areas in your home, practice safe sex, do not share personal items, travel wisely, and keep your pets healthy.

Mary Beth Krance, M.D., completed her fellowship in Infectious Disease at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. As our community continues to grow, and as the need for infectious disease expertise increases, Dr. Krance will greatly benefit Rapid City and the surrounding areas. Dr. Krance will also be practicing with James Keegan, M.D., and Jorge Reyno, M.D.
